- Goalrilla takes a middle position: rather than draining, it tells owners to fill the base to roughly 75% of capacity in winter, leaving room for the approximately 25% the water expands as it turns to ice, or to switch the base to sand instead.
- Lifetime Products is the outlier. Its own FAQ states that its bases are made from flexible HDPE plastic that can expand along with the freezing water, and that adding antifreeze “is not necessary.”
That’s a genuine, sourced disagreement between manufacturers, not a case of one brand being wrong. Independent installer guidance is consistent on this even though we couldn’t find a manufacturer statement quantifying exactly how much weight a snow-loaded backboard can take: clear accumulated snow with a soft push broom or a leaf blower, never a metal shovel, ice scraper, or chisel, which can scratch or crack the board’s surface regardless of whether it’s glass, acrylic, or polycarbonate. We also looked for verified guidance on whether cold temperatures themselves make polycarbonate or acrylic more brittle, since that claim shows up on a few retailer blogs. Keep the breakaway rim’s spring from seizing
